Estonia, Battle of Paide: The Russian advance concluded with the sacking of Weissenstein (Paide) in 1573 where, after its capture, the occupying forces roasted some of the leaders of the Swedish garrison alive, including the commander. This triggered a retaliatory campaign by John centred on Wesenberg, to which the army departed in November 1573 with Klas Åkesson Tott in overall command and Pontus de la Gardie as field commander
Estonia. Battle of Lode. Battle of Lode was a battle fought during the Livonian War, between Sweden and Russia on January 23, 1573. The battle was won by the Swedes. It is said the Russian force lost about 7,000 men during the battle, a number which, most likely, is exaggerated – however, the losses suffered were probably heavy. The Swedish casualties however, were light. Tott returned to Reval with all his artillery, hundreds of horses and a large number of sleds abandoned by the Russians during their rout. The Russian Czar, Ivan IV later began peace negotiations and sent a letter to Johan III king of Sweden. But due to previous negotiations, the Swedish King doubted the Russian desire to make peace.
Estonia. Efforts by Magnus to besiege Swedish-controlled Reval were faltering, with support from neither Ivan nor Magnus' brother, Frederick II of Denmark forthcoming Tatar army expanded and changed leadership. Kuchum’s nephew, Mahmet-kul, assumed control of the Tatar army. The Stroganovs realized that they could no longer expect their settlers to remain in the lands around Perm if they only fought a defensive battle. The tsar granted the Stroganov family permission to invade Asia. However, the tsar soon changed his mind and told the Stroganovs to retract from Siberia, fearing that Russia did not have the resources or manpower to topple Kuchum Khan’s empire.
